A 63-year-old man named William Hayes was arrested in Memphis, Tennessee, for attempting to purchase two Kia Telluride SUVs worth $158,885 using a counterfeit driver's license bearing the name of a deceased individual.
The incident occurred at Gossett Kia, located at 1900 Covington Pike.
The dealership staff, suspecting fraudulent activity, promptly alerted the authorities.
Unaware of the police presence, Hayes confidently went through the entire purchasing process.
In a video that has since gone viral, Hayes is seen shaking hands with a dealership employee, appearing assured that his scheme had succeeded.
However, moments after being handed the keys to the vehicles, he was apprehended by police officers who were waiting nearby.
Memphis Police Department confirmed the arrest and detailed the charges against Hayes, which include forgery and attempted theft of property valued between $60,000 and $250,000. His bond has been set at $50,000.
