A 19-year-old YouTuber named Norme set a new Guinness World Record by staying awake for 12 days, surpassing the previous record of 11 days held by Randy Gardner since 1964.
This remarkable feat was documented in a viral livestream on 'Rumble', an alternative platform to YouTube, and garnered massive attention, with 9,000 viewers tuning in at the end of his vigil.
Norme's attempt was not without controversy and concern. Unlike previous record attempts, which had medical professionals on board to monitor the participants, Norme did not have such supervision. This lack of medical oversight raised serious health concerns among his fans and the general public.
Throughout the 12-day period, police frequently visited Norme due to fan worries about his wellbeing. The livestream showed ambulances and police cars lining the streets outside his house towards the end of the challenge, indicating the high level of concern for his health.
The previous record-holder, Randy Gardner, experienced severe side effects such as hallucinations and extreme confusion during his 11-day stint without sleep. Scientists documented Gardner's every move, highlighting the potential dangers of such extreme sleep deprivation.
Since Gardner's record, there have been two other notable attempts by McDonald and Maureen Weston, who stayed awake for over 400 hours. However, these attempts were not recognized by Guinness due to the lack of official documentation and medical supervision.
