Nigeria's National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has disclosed that "a number of illicit weapons currently in circulation in Nigeria originally belonged to the Federal Government."

This statement was made during an arms destruction exercise conducted by the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment in Abuja.

Ribadu's disclosure highlights a critical issue within Nigeria's security framework: the diversion of government-owned weapons into the hands of non-state actors such as terrorists and bandits.

He attributed this alarming situation to corrupt elements within the security agencies, condemning those who facilitate the distribution of these weapons.

The NSA emphasized the government's commitment to addressing this internal corruption, which directly undermines national security efforts.
