Mason Greenwood to Switch Int’l Allegiance to Jamaica, Set to Overlook England

Mason Greenwood, a 22-year-old forward currently playing for Marseille, is reportedly considering a pivotal shift in his international football career.

According to recent reports, Greenwood is contemplating switching his international allegiance from England to Jamaica.

This decision is heavily influenced by Jamaica's head coach, McClaren, who has a history with Greenwood from their time together at Manchester United.

Greenwood qualifies to play for Jamaica through his father and has only made one appearance for the England national team back in 2020.

His absence from the England squad can be traced back to serious charges in 2022, which led to a pause in his football career until he joined Getafe in 2023.

Under FIFA regulations, players are allowed to switch their national allegiance if they have played fewer than four competitive matches for their current national team.

Jamaica is keen on bolstering their squad as they aim for qualification in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Jamaican Football Federation has reached out to Greenwood, recognizing his potential to significantly enhance their team's performance.

Greenwood had a promising season with Getafe, which has likely contributed to Jamaica's interest in securing his talents.

McClaren's strategy involves recruiting overseas players like Greenwood to strengthen Jamaica's chances of World Cup qualification. This move could be pivotal for both Greenwood's career and Jamaica's aspirations on the global football stage.
