Suspected cybercriminals have successfully compromised the domain address of Nigeria's banking giant, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank). This breach has led to the interception of sensitive customer data, raising serious concerns about online banking security.
According to reports from Peoples Gazette, the hackers managed to seize control of the GTBank website, exploiting vulnerabilities to intercept data from unsuspecting customers. This incident is part of a larger phishing operation aimed at stealing personal and financial information.

"Phishing attacks are a common method used by hackers to deceive individuals into providing confidential information," explained a cybersecurity expert. "In this case, the attackers likely used techniques such as fake websites or emails to trick GTBank customers into revealing their account details."
The compromised data could include login credentials, personal identification numbers and other sensitive information, which can be used for fraudulent activities. Customers are urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity on their accounts immediately.
GTBank, now operating under the name Guaranty Trust Bank Ltd as a subsidiary of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc., has updated its logo to reflect this change. However, this rebranding does not mitigate the risks posed by the recent cyber attack.
To protect themselves, customers should follow best practices such as using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication and avoiding unsecured public Wi-Fi networks.
Additionally, verifying digital certificates and using secure communication protocols like HTTPS can help prevent man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks, where attackers intercept and potentially alter communications between two parties.
In response to the breach, GTBank has advised affected customers to contact their support team immediately. "If you have responded to any suspicious emails or provided confidential information, please notify us immediately by calling +234 0700 4826 66328 or WhatsApp +234 904 000 2900," stated a GTBank representative.
