Two officers have admitted to engaging in a sexual act within the confines of a police station lift.
The incident, which occurred on November 16, 2022, involved Trainee Detective Constable Pierce Lynch and Detective Constable Jessica Martin, who confessed during a misconduct hearing held this week in Sutton.
The pair, who had been drinking for three hours at a nearby pub, returned to Bethnal Green police station to collect their belongings.
It was there that their "spontaneous" 10-second encounter took place, only to be interrupted by fellow officers PCs Flaherty and Frost-Smith.
According to Elisabeth Acker, representing the Met, "They saw TDC Martin and PC Lynch engaging in a sexual act – that sexual activity being oral sex, performed by TDC Martin on TDC Lynch."
PC Frost-Smith reportedly admonished the couple, stating, “This is unacceptable, guys,” before opting to take the stairs and immediately reporting the incident to a superior officer.
During the hearing, Lynch provided a written statement explaining, “When we entered the lift, we both started kissing, and things became very passionate very quickly. Jess undid my zip, I undid my top button, and she started touching my penis through my boxers.”
He insisted that the act was unplanned and emphasized that he was “not erect” at any point. Meanwhile, Martin claimed she could not recall the event but accepted her participation, expressing during the hearing that she had no desire to be interrupted “by anyone.”
Both officers denied gross misconduct charges, though they admitted to being intoxicated. They also argued that their actions were not visible to the public.
However, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Alexis Boon highlighted that despite being off-duty, the officers should have been aware that the lift could be accessed by contractors or others.
