Military Warns Against Calls to Overthrow Government, Declares Such Demands as Treasonable Offenses

F.Adenike

The Nigerian military has issued a stern warning to individuals advocating for the overthrow of President Bola Tinubu's government, categorizing such demands as "treasonable offenses."

This announcement comes in response to a viral video where citizens expressed their frustrations over economic hardships, particularly citing the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating exchange rate of the Naira.

Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, emphasized the military's commitment to supporting Nigeria's democracy and the current administration.

He stated, "The military does not have reasons to take over the government because they have enjoyed enormous support from the President." Gusau further clarified that advocating for a coup is a violation of the Nigerian Constitution and warned that those found guilty will face severe legal consequences.

The military's statement underscores its dedication to safeguarding the nation's territorial integrity and maintaining democratic governance. Brigadier-General Gusau assured that the military, alongside other security agencies, is tasked with taking necessary action against any group or individual pushing for unconstitutional changes.

"The AFN is steadfastly committed to the preservation and advancement of our democracy," he reiterated.
