The Crime Survey for England and Wales has reported that more than 200 smartphones are stolen daily on UK streets.
This represents a staggering 150% increase from the previous year, driven by the rising demand for second-hand devices.
The surge in smartphone thefts has raised concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement. Alarmingly, four out of five investigations into these thefts close without identifying suspects, and only 0.8% of cases result in charges.
Policing Minister Dame Diana Johnson emphasized the government's commitment to addressing this issue. "We are dedicated to ensuring public safety and preventing robberies," she stated.
The government is actively collaborating with tech firms and police chiefs to tackle the problem head-on. One of the key measures being urged is for phone companies to quickly disable stolen phones.
This step aims to curb the resale of these devices in the second-hand market, thereby reducing the incentive for theft.
