‘My Mother is From France’ – Olise Explains Why He Snubbed Nigeria, England, Algeria

Bayern Munich talented attacking midfielder, Michael Olise has been a subject of international football discussions due to his eligibility to represent multiple countries.

Born on December 12, 2001, in Hammersmith, London, Olise's diverse heritage includes a Nigerian father and a French-Algerian mother. This unique background makes him eligible to play for France, Algeria, England, or Nigeria.

Despite this array of choices, Olise has committed to representing France on the international stage. His decision has sparked curiosity and debate among football fans and analysts alike.

In a press conference held at Clairefontaine ahead of France's clash with Italy, Olise explained his choice, stating, "My mother is from France. I came here as a child. I had a connection with the French team, that's why I play for France."

Olise's journey through football has seen him develop his skills in some of the best academies in England, including Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City, before making his professional debut with Reading in 2019.

He later moved to Crystal Palace in 2021, where he spent three seasons and earned a nomination for PFA Young Player of the Year in 2024. His impressive performances caught the attention of Bayern Munich, who signed him in 2024.

Internationally, Olise's career began with the France U18 team in 2019, followed by a call-up to the France U21 team in 2022. He made his senior debut for France during a friendly against Paraguay on July 4, 2024, and subsequently played a major role in France's Olympic squad, contributing two goals and five assists during the tournament.

While Olise remains eligible to play for England, Algeria, and Nigeria, his commitment to France appears steadfast. Reports suggest that he would only consider playing for Nigeria if he does not receive further call-ups from France.

However, given his recent inclusion in France's national team for the UEFA Nations League matches against Italy and Belgium, it seems likely that Olise's future lies with Les Bleus.
