The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced a major recall of Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap, specifically the 100g variant with batch number 81832M 08, produced in Germany.
This decision was driven by the discovery of a harmful chemical impurity, Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), also known as Lilial, within the product.
NAFDAC's statement highlighted that "the presence of Butylphenyl Methylpropional in the product violates the Cosmetic Products Regulation, as it poses serious health concerns."
The chemical is banned in cosmetic products due to its potential to cause reproductive harm and skin sensitization. It has been linked to risks for unborn children and allergic reactions in users.
The agency emphasized that this particular batch of Dove soap, along with several other Dove cosmetic products such as Derma Spa Goodness and Men Care, have faced recalls or bans in various countries for the same reason. NAFDAC reiterated that these products are not listed in its database and stressed the prohibition on importing soaps into Nigeria.
Consumers who have purchased the affected Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap are advised to discontinue use immediately and submit any remaining stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.
The agency also urged healthcare professionals and consumers to report any adverse effects experienced from using regulated products via its E-reporting platforms or the Med-safety app available on Android and iOS.
