NAFDAC Raids Illegal Alcohol Facility in FCT

Esther

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully raided an illegal alcohol production facility in the Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This operation is part of NAFDAC's ongoing efforts to curb the spread of substandard and counterfeit products.

During the raid, NAFDAC officials seized a significant quantity of adulterated alcoholic beverages and discovered expired salt with falsified expiry dates.

The Director of Investigation and Enforcement for NAFDAC’s Federal Task Force, Mr. Shaba Mohammed, highlighted the severity of the issue, stating that "Lugbe has become a hub for producing and distributing substandard alcoholic beverages."

He further explained that imitation brands were being sold under fake labels of popular alcoholic brands, with operations repackaging counterfeit alcohol in used bottles with forged labels and tampered expiration dates.

The facility, which was operating out of a residential apartment, has been sealed, and those responsible have been summoned for further investigation. Mr. Mohammed assured that "NAFDAC will remove the counterfeit products from the production site, and our Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate will sweep the market to clear out any remaining items."

Additionally, Mr. Tamanuwa Andrew, Deputy Director of Investigation and Enforcement for NAFDAC in Kaduna, reported similar findings in Wuse Market and Mararaba, a community bordering the FCT and Nasarawa.

He noted an increase in unregistered herbal remedies and pharmaceutical products, emphasizing that NAFDAC would intensify surveillance to protect public health.

Penalties for those involved in producing counterfeit goods will be determined following further investigation.
