The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in Nigerian universities, comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has announced an indefinite nationwide strike.
This decision was made due to the non-payment of four months' withheld salaries. The strike is set to commence at midnight on Sunday, October 27, 2024, allowing branch officers of NASU to be present before its initiation.
The circular, signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU, and Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, President of SSANU, highlighted that despite President Bola Tinubu's approval for 50% of the withheld salaries to be paid, the Minister of Finance's alleged inaction has cast doubt on the government's commitment to resolving the issue. JAC expressed regret over the situation, noting that multiple notices had been issued to the government to address this "ugly situation."

Initially scheduled for October 23, 2024, the strike was postponed to accommodate a Trade Group Council meeting of NASU branches, which took place on October 23 and 24 at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. The strategic change in timing was intended for effective coordination and to ensure both unions were aligned in their actions. JAC emphasized their determination to persist in this struggle until they achieve "ultimate victory."
