The Nigerian Navy, through its Operation Delta Sanity, has successfully intercepted and impounded three wooden boats laden with stolen crude oil.
This operation took place in the Krakrama Axis of Rivers State. The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) PATHFINDER was instrumental in this mission, which is part of a broader strategy to combat oil theft in the region.
The Navy has been employing a multi-faceted approach that includes aggressive surveillance, patrols, dismantling illegal refining sites, and arresting suspects involved in these illicit activities. This initiative is crucial as oil theft has been a major issue for Nigeria, costing the country millions of dollars annually.
In 2022 alone, it was reported that $23 million was lost daily due to oil theft, with losses reaching $1.43 billion in March 2023. The Navy's efforts are aimed at reducing these losses and achieving a production goal of 1.7 million barrels per day.
