NCAA Clarifies Helicopter Crash: Debunks Airworthiness Rumors

F.Adenike

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has addressed and refuted claims concerning the airworthiness of a helicopter that tragically crashed in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The helicopter, bearing registration 5NBQG, was operated by East Wind Aviation and contracted by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

It was en route to the FPSO-NUIMS ANTAN oil rig when it met with disaster shortly after taking off from the Port Harcourt Military Base.

Chris Najomo, the Director-General of NCAA, firmly denied reports suggesting that the helicopter had been scrapped in 2018.

He stated, "The attention of the Authority has been brought to a report by the Sahara Reporters on the airworthiness status of the recently crashed helicopter... Their report concluded with a question of how the Helicopter was moved to Nigeria and registered as 5N-BQG before the crash."

Najomo emphasized that these claims were inaccurate, asserting that the helicopter was indeed airworthy at the time of the incident. He highlighted the need for transparency and clarity regarding the regulatory processes involved in aircraft registration and safety compliance.

This statement comes in response to allegations that the helicopter had been deregistered in 2009 and subsequently scrapped in 2018, raising questions about its re-registration and operational status in Nigeria.
