NCC Announces Completion of NIN-SIM Linkage of All Phone Numbers

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced the successful completion of the federal government's initiative to link all phone numbers in the country to the National Identification Number (NIN).

This achievement marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria's telecommunications sector, as it enhances national security and data management.

The NIN-SIM linkage policy, introduced in December 2020, aimed to improve security by ensuring that every phone number is connected to a verified NIN.

According to Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, this initiative faced several challenges, including enforcement difficulties and extended deadlines to facilitate compliance.

Despite these hurdles, the completion of the process represents a major step forward in digital security for Nigeria.

Maida emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "Though it was a bit painful for Nigerians, I think we also need to appreciate what that does for us. Today, there is no phone number that we cannot associate with a verified NIN."

This linkage allows for greater accountability, particularly in identifying individuals involved in criminal activities. As Maida noted, "If this phone number is involved in fraud or any crime, I can now authoritatively say, based on the NIN linked to it, this is the person who is using that phone number."

The successful implementation of the NIN-SIM linkage policy is expected to play a crucial role in improving overall data accuracy and management. It could also impact related areas such as financial services, governance, and national planning, reflecting a broader context of enhanced security measures and identity verification systems in Nigeria.
