Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South in Nigeria's National Assembly, made a fervent appeal to President Bola Tinubu to reconsider certain economic policies that have been causing significant distress among Nigerians.
In his statement, Ndume pointed out the alarming rise in prices of essential commodities such as petrol and food, which he believes are exacerbating the hardships faced by the populace.
Ndume attributed these economic challenges to what he described as "bad elements" within the advisory circle of President Tinubu. He accused these advisers of pushing for harsh reforms and policies that fail to address critical issues like inflation and exchange rates.
According to Ndume, these policies are not only misguided but also threaten to undermine the administration's efforts to stabilize the economy.
"I personally believe President Bola Ahmed Tinubu means well for Nigeria and Nigerians," Ndume stated. "But some of his advisers who don’t mean well to the people of this country give him the wrong advice."
The senator's remarks come in the wake of a recent increase in petrol prices by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), which raised the cost to ₦1,030 per litre.
This price hike, coupled with the removal of subsidies and other economic measures, has intensified the financial strain on Nigerian families, particularly those in Ndume's home state of Borno.
Ndume urged President Tinubu to "resist these bad people who want to pitch the people against his administration" and to urgently address the economic issues plaguing the nation. He emphasized the need for policies that enhance the purchasing power of Nigerians and alleviate their daily struggles.
