NECO: NANS Kicks Against N50,000 Fee for Reprinting of Certificate

Esther

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly opposed the National Examination Council's (NECO) recent decision to impose a N50,000 fee for the reprinting of certificates.

This policy, announced by NECO's Registrar, Dantani Wushishi, in Minna, Niger State, has sparked significant controversy and backlash from the student community.

Comrade Abdulyekinn Odunayo, the NANS Clerk of the Senate, described the fee as "outrageous" and a blatant commercialization of education. He emphasized that this decision places an "unacceptable burden on students," many of whom are already grappling with severe economic hardships.

Odunayo further criticized the policy, stating it would "exacerbate financial exclusion, denying countless students access to their rightful certificates, perpetuate inequality, disproportionately affecting disadvantaged students and undermine the integrity of NECO."

NANS has called for an immediate reversal of the fee, advocating for a reduction to a more affordable amount and an extension of the reprint request deadline to five years.

The organization also urged for stakeholder engagement to ensure that future decisions are made with student interests at the forefront.
