The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a stark warning to the residents of Rivers State, Nigeria, about impending floods expected within the next four weeks.
This alert comes as the intensity of rainfall in the South-South region, particularly in Rivers State, is predicted to increase significantly. Mr. Adebiyi Razak, the South-South Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, emphasized the urgency of the situation during a briefing in Port Harcourt on Sunday, September 15, 2024.
"In the next four weeks, the intensity of the rain will be high in Rivers, and we have already sensitized people in areas prone to flash floods," he stated. NEMA has identified several Local Government Areas (LGAs) that are particularly vulnerable to flooding.
These include Ahoada West, Ahoada East, Andoni, Ndoni, Obio/Akpor, Oyigbo, and Tai, along with various coastal regions. Notably, Tai has already experienced flash floods, prompting the establishment of two Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the area.
To mitigate the impact of the anticipated floods, NEMA has launched awareness campaigns and is stockpiling essential supplies. "We have visited Ahoada West, Ahoada East, Andoni, Ndoni, Obio/Akpor, Oyigbo, and Tai Local Government Areas, as well as coastal areas that are likely to be impacted," Mr. Razak explained. He added that the agency is working closely with the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency and local government councils to enhance community readiness and minimize potential damage.
The situation is further exacerbated by heavy rains in the northern parts of Nigeria, which are expected to drain into the South-South region, causing significant water level rises.
"A water rise in the region is imminent, especially as heavy rains in the North are draining into the South-South," Mr. Razak warned. NEMA's proactive measures aim to ensure that residents are well-prepared for the looming floods.
The agency's efforts include sensitizing communities, establishing IDP camps, and coordinating with local authorities to provide timely support.
Residents of Rivers State are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to safeguard their lives and properties.
The collaboration between NEMA and local agencies shows the importance of community preparedness in the face of natural disasters.
