Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed Yechiel Leiter as the new ambassador to the United States.

This appointment comes at a crucial time, signifying the importance of Israel's strategic relationship with the US amidst ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Yechiel Leiter, who was born in the United States, has an extensive background in public service.

He previously served as the chief of staff in Israel's finance ministry and held roles such as deputy director general in the Education Ministry and acting chairman of the Israel Ports Company.

His deep understanding of American culture and politics is expected to be a valuable asset in his new role.

The appointment follows a personal tragedy for Leiter, whose son was killed last year during the Gaza war against the Palestinian militant group, Hamas.

Despite this loss, Leiter is recognized as "a highly capable diplomat, an eloquent speaker," according to Netanyahu, who emphasized Leiter's qualifications and readiness to strengthen US-Israel relations.
