Nigeria Customs Hit ₦5.1trillon Revenue Target for 2024 - CG Adewale Adeniyi

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has exceeded its 2024 revenue target of ₦5.1 trillion by over 10%, as announced by Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi.

This milestone was reached on November 12, 2024, with more than a month remaining in the fiscal year, highlighting the effectiveness of the NCS's strategic initiatives.

Adeniyi attributed this success to "enhanced stakeholder collaboration, improved processes, and modernised systems," which have collectively driven significant improvements in revenue collection and trade facilitation. Among the key reforms implemented are the Authorised Economic Operators (AEO) scheme and an advanced ruling system, both of which have streamlined operations and increased efficiency.

The introduction of 24-hour cargo clearance at major ports has been particularly impactful, significantly reducing dwell time and facilitating faster trade.

This initiative is part of the NCS's broader effort to modernize customs operations and improve service delivery. In addition to revenue achievements, the NCS has made substantial progress in enforcement activities.

The service reported seizures valued at ₦28.1 billion in 2024, targeting critical areas such as wildlife smuggling, arms and ammunition, narcotics, and pharmaceutical products.

These efforts shows the NCS's commitment to protecting both citizens and the economy from illicit activities. "The scale of our intervention is reflected in these seizures," Adeniyi noted, emphasizing the importance of a robust enforcement strategy.

The declaration of a state of emergency at major ports led to the interception of 48 containers of illicit pharmaceutical items and narcotics, significantly disrupting the flow of potentially harmful products. As the NCS continues to refine its strategies, the insights and experiences of stakeholders remain crucial.

The ongoing Comptroller General Conference, themed "NCS: Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purposes," provides a platform for rich discussions on revenue collection, trade facilitation, partnerships, and compliance.

Adeniyi highlighted the importance of multisectoral engagement, stating that "no single agency can effectively address customs challenges alone."
