National Assembly of Nigeria has approved life sentences for drug offenders, marking a pivotal amendment to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act.
This decision, finalized on Thursday, November 21, through a voice vote in the Senate, aims to deter illegal drug activities by imposing severe penalties.
The amendment specifically targets individuals involved in the "storage, custody, movement, carriage, or concealment of dangerous drugs or controlled substances," particularly when these actions are carried out while armed or disguised.
Such offenders, upon conviction, will face life imprisonment. Senator Tahir Monguno, Chairman of the Senate Conference Committee, emphasized that this measure is intended to "deter illegal drug activities by imposing stricter penalties."
This legislative change reflects Nigeria's intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking and related offenses, aligning with global trends toward harsher punishments for drug-related crimes.
