Nigeria's Non-Oil Exports Surge to $4.52 Billion in 2023

The country's non-oil export sector achieved remarkable growth in 2023, reaching a total value of $4.52 billion. This represents a substantial 28.04% increase from the previous year, as reported by the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC).

The Executive Director/CEO of NEPC, Nonye Ayeni, announced these figures during a recognition dinner for top-performing non-oil export companies held in Lagos on October 20th.

Ayeni highlighted that Nigeria exported 6.685 million metric tonnes of non-oil products, including a diverse range of goods such as urea, cocoa beans, sesame seeds, soybeans, gold dore, cashew nuts, aluminum ingots, and hibiscus flowers. She stated, "These products have positioned Nigeria as a competitive player in global markets, bolstering foreign exchange inflows and contributing to the stabilization of the naira."

The NEPC plans to further enhance this sector by prioritizing 20 key products, supporting 10 top exporters per product, and targeting five international markets. Ayeni emphasized the importance of these efforts, saying, "Your contributions helps Nigeria’s immense potential beyond oil, and serve as an inspiration to other businesses to tap into opportunities in the non-oil sector."

Additionally, the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, noted the government's commitment to expanding market access for Nigerian exporters through new trade agreements with countries like the UK, the US, China, and India.

"We are working to remove barriers for exporters, as President Tinubu has emphasized. Our goal is to attract foreign investment, expand export capacity, and address any challenges exporters may face," she explained.
