Nigeria’s Power Generation Reaches 5,313MW, First Time in 3 Years - Adelabu Confirms

Nigeria's Ministry of Power has announced a major milestone: the country's power generation reached a three-year peak of 5,313 megawatts (MW). This achievement marks a notable improvement in Nigeria's energy sector, which has faced numerous challenges over the years.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, emphasized the importance of this development and urged Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to absorb more energy to prevent grid collapse.

He stated, "When power is produced and not picked by the DisCos, it could lead to grid collapse as frequency drops." To mitigate this risk, Adelabu highlighted efforts to encourage industries to purchase bulk energy.

This milestone is part of broader governmental efforts to enhance Nigeria's power infrastructure. The federal government has set an ambitious target to generate 6,000MW of electricity by the end of the year.

Adelabu reaffirmed this goal during his ministerial address in Abuja, where he presented the achievements of his ministry since President Bola Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023.

He noted that the country's power generation had already risen to 5,000MW on May 3, 2023, and expressed confidence that the 6,000MW target would be met by year-end, citing improvements in the sector throughout 2023.

Bolaji Tunji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations to the Minister of Power, issued a statement underlining the importance of this achievement. The increase in power generation is seen as a critical step towards ensuring a stable and increased energy supply in Nigeria.
