In the United Nations Human Rights Council elections, Nigeria was not overlooked or "snubbed," as some reports have suggested.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, clarified on October 13, 2024, that Nigeria did not stand as a candidate for this election cycle.
Instead, the country strategically chose to support the endorsed candidates from the African regional group Benin, Gambia, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ethiopia who successfully secured all five available seats.
Onanuga emphasized that "Nigeria was not on the ballot in the election held on 9 October," and any votes recorded for Nigeria were likely cast in error during the secret balloting process. He further explained that Nigeria's decision aligns with its long-standing diplomatic efforts to promote collective African representation and unity on the global stage, a hallmark of President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.
