The Nigerian Army has officially refuted widespread rumors regarding the death of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja. These rumors, which originated from a social media post by a Nigerian journalist, claimed that Lagbaja had succumbed to stage three cancer in an undisclosed overseas hospital nearly 48 hours prior.
The post further suggested that the news of his death was being concealed due to intense lobbying among generals vying for his position.

In response, the Nigerian Army labeled these reports as "fake news." Despite the viral nature of the claims, sources within the Army Headquarters confirmed that while Lt. Gen.
Lagbaja is critically ill, he is very much alive and receiving medical treatment abroad. A source emphasized, "The COAS is not dead. He is only critically ill at the moment. We should be praying for him at this critical time and not spreading rumours of his death."
The situation coincides with the retirement of 15 generals from the Artillery Corps of the Nigerian Army, who were formally pulled out of service during a ceremony at the Nigerian Army School of Artillery in Kaduna State.
This group included 11 Major Generals and four Brigadier Generals. Maj. Gen. James Myam (retd), speaking on behalf of the retired officers, expressed gratitude for their careers and extended well-wishes to Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, acknowledging his leadership and wishing him continued strength and wisdom.
