Members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) are calling on the Federal Government to fulfill its promise of increasing their monthly allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000.

This change was approved in July but has yet to be implemented, leaving corps members struggling with the current economic conditions.

The corps members have taken to social media to voice their frustrations, highlighting the inadequacy of the existing allowance in the face of rising costs.

One member tweeted, “Three months after, the Federal Government still believes that ₦33k is enough for NYSC members to survive,” expressing the widespread sentiment among the group.

The financial strain is exacerbated by high transportation and living costs. For instance, a member shared, “High transportation costs: @Eze_na_ujari spends ₦5,000 on transportation and ₦2,000 on Community Development Service (CDS) contributions, leaving him with ₦26,000 from the ₦33,000 allowance.”

Another described the situation as “suffering and wickedness” due to poor living conditions in NYSC lodges.
