The Nigerian government has approved a 50 percent electricity subsidy for public hospitals nationwide.

This initiative aims to reduce operational costs and alleviate the financial burden on patients. Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, announced this development during his visit to the National Neo-Psychiatric Hospital in Barnawa, Kaduna State. "This subsidy is designed to cut the running costs for public hospitals and ease the impact on patients," Dr. Alausa stated.

The minister also revealed plans to rename federal hospitals as specialist hospitals to improve care delivery and reduce stigma associated with psychiatric facilities. "We are going to change the names of our Federal Hospitals to Specialist Hospitals to expand care delivery and destigmatize hospitals so that everybody can come here. While the core services will remain psychiatric, this re-naming will allow for the continuous expansion of services," he explained.

During his visit, Dr. Alausa commissioned several projects aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure. These include the Electronic Health Records and Alternative Power Supply at the Lawal Jafaru Isah Emergency Complex, and a solarization project at the dialysis unit, which features a solar-powered borehole and a 10.2 KVA inverter with a lithium battery at the Abdulkareem Jika Yusuf COVID-19 Intervention Centre.
