Nigerian Govt Accuses Elon Musk’s Starlink of Violating NCC Regulation

Esther

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Tuesday accused Elon Musk's Starlink of breaching regulations by unilaterally increasing its data tariffs without obtaining the necessary approval. This action was seen as a violation of Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 and the conditions of Starlink's license.

The NCC expressed concern over this infringement, viewing it as a threat to regulatory stability within the telecommunications industry. Despite having filed a request for price adjustment, Starlink announced the price changes before receiving a decision from the commission.

The controversy arose when Starlink increased its monthly subscription fee in Nigeria by 97%, from N38,000 to N75,000, and raised the cost of the Starlink kit to N590,000, up 34% from the previous price.

This move sparked criticism from stakeholders in the Nigerian telecom sector, who accused the NCC of double standards, as local operators have been unable to adjust their prices due to regulatory constraints despite rising operational costs.

However, the situation took a turn when the NCC retracted its statement about sanctioning Starlink, claiming it was "made in error." The commission requested media outlets to withdraw any related publications, acknowledging that the initial announcement was incorrect.
