The Nigerian government has signed an agreement with taxi operators at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to convert their vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

This initiative, formalized is part of a broader strategy to reduce transportation costs and promote environmentally friendly fuel alternatives. Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Director and Chief Executive of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), highlighted the economic benefits of this conversion. "Once we hit 50 per cent conversion, which is about 400 vehicles, a 30 per cent discount will be implemented immediately," he stated, indicating that passengers could expect significant savings on shuttle fares.

The program is not just about cost reduction; it also emphasizes safety and infrastructure development.

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has approved certified CNG cylinders, ensuring they are "practically bulletproof and cannot explode or break," as assured by Oluwagbemi.

Furthermore, the initiative has expanded CNG refilling stations in Abuja from one to seven within a year, facilitating easier access for converted vehicles.

This agreement aligns with President Bola Tinubu's commitment to converting one million commercial vehicles to CNG, a response to rising fuel prices.

The PCNGI plans to introduce various cylinder sizes to accommodate different vehicle types, contributing to a more efficient and sustainable transportation network across Nigeria.
