Nigerian House of Representatives Advances Bill to Arm FRSC Officers

F.Adenike

Nigeria's House of Representatives is advancing a bill that seeks to authorize officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to carry firearms.

This proposal, which has successfully passed its second reading, aims to establish a "Road Safety Special Armed Squad" within the FRSC. The bill is sponsored by Abiodun Adesida and Olaide Muhammed, both members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and security measures across Nigeria. Speaker Abbas Tajudeen described the bill as "straightforward," leading to its referral to the committee on FRSC for further legislative action without debate.

This development marks a continuation of the FRSC's longstanding pursuit of permission to bear arms, following an unsuccessful attempt during the 8th Assembly.
