The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has initiated a formal investigation following the circulation of a viral video showing a woman tearing her husband's Nigerian Standard Passport. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, August 10, has sparked widespread concern and debate on social media.
The woman, identified as Mrs. Igiebor, was seen in the video destroying the passport shortly after their arrival at the airport. This act has been deemed a serious offense under Nigerian law.
According to the NIS, if the allegations are substantiated, Mrs. Igiebor's actions would constitute a breach of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with corresponding penalties outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
Comptroller General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, has directed that Mrs. Igiebor be summoned for further investigation. "The Nigeria Immigration Service remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security and to preserving the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal instruments," stated DCI Kenneth Udo, the Service Public Relations Officer, in an official statement issued in Abuja.
