The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning of a nationwide shutdown if its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, is arrested or detained by the Nigerian Police.
This announcement came on August 20, 2024, following an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the NLC headquarters.
The urgent meeting was convened in response to a police invitation extended to Ajaero over allegations of terrorism financing.
Despite the gravity of the accusations, the NEC resolved that Ajaero should honor the police invitation. However, they emphasized that their legal adviser would seek an extension for his appearance before the authorities.
Deputy President of the NLC, Comrade Ado Kabiru Sani, addressed the media and the nation's workforce, urging them to remain vigilant.
"As a committed labor center, we will honor the invitation of the police because we are not a faceless organization," Sani stated. "But we are working with our lawyer for an extension of time.
In the event that the President is arrested, all workers will down tools immediately. We should wait for further directives from our leadership."
This development comes amid ongoing discussions about the ₦70,000 minimum wage, adding another layer of tension to the already charged atmosphere.
The NLC's firm stance highlights its readiness to mobilize in defense of its leadership and workers' rights amidst these serious allegations and broader economic negotiations.
The situation remains fluid, and the NLC has called on all its members to stay alert for further instructions.
