Nigerian Labour Union Demands Immediate Reversal of Fuel Price Hike

Esther

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an "immediate reversal" of the recent fuel price hike implemented by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

The official price of petrol was increased from N617 to N897 per litre, sparking outrage among workers and citizens alike.

In a post on its X page, the NLC stated, "We demand the immediate reversal of the latest increase in the pump price of PMS across the country."

This sentiment was echoed by NLC President Joe Ajaero, who expressed feelings of betrayal by President Bola Tinubu's administration.

According to Ajaero, the acceptance of a N70,000 minimum wage was based on an understanding that there would be no further increases in fuel prices.

Ajaero warned that the union's decision-making bodies would convene soon to decide on a course of action, which would be publicly announced. "In the coming days, the appropriate organs of Congress will be meeting to make appropriate decisions," he said.

The NLC's demand for a price reversal comes amid broader concerns about the management of NNPC and ongoing tensions between labor unions and the government over economic policies affecting workers.

This situation highlights the fragile relationship between the government and its workforce, as well as the broader implications for Nigeria's economy.
