Nigerian Oil Company Sues Media Outlets N20 Billion Over Dirty Fuel Allegations

Esther

Matrix Energy Limited, a prominent indigenous oil company, has initiated legal action against two media houses, seeking N20 billion in damages.

The lawsuits, filed at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, stem from reports that accused the company of importing substandard fuel from Malta into Nigeria.

The company's CEO, Alhaji Abdulkadir Adisa Aliu, and Matrix Energy Limited are the plaintiffs in the cases numbered CV/3718/2024 and CV/3719/2024.

They claim that the reports, titled "From Russia to Malta: How Matrix Energy imports dirty petrol," are false, malicious, and defamatory.

The plaintiffs argue that these publications have severely damaged their reputation by suggesting they are involved in importing low-quality petroleum products.

Represented by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Ahmed Raji, the plaintiffs are demanding N10 billion from each media house and an additional N200 million to cover the costs of filing the suits.

They are also seeking court orders to prevent further publication of these allegations, mandate retractions, deletions, and public apologies.

"The reports published by the defendants deliberately, carelessly, intentionally, and maliciously portrayed us as conniving with economic enemies of Nigeria to import adulterated, substandard/low quality petroleum products into the country," stated the plaintiffs in their court filings.

Matrix Energy Limited had previously denied any involvement in such activities through a statement by its spokesman, Ibrahim Akinola.

The company maintains that it has no connections to the alleged importation of dirty fuel from Malta, a country with no known oil refineries.

In addition to the financial compensation, the plaintiffs are asking for a perpetual injunction to restrain the defendants from publishing any further defamatory content about them.

They also seek a court order compelling the media houses to issue an unreserved apology.
