The Nigerian Police have successfully rescued 20 medical students who were abducted by a notorious criminal gang.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, announced that the operation led to the neutralization of the kidnap kingpin and the arrest of two other abductors.

The students were kidnapped on August 15 while traveling from Benue to Enugu. Along with the students, five other passengers and two additional victims who were already in captivity were also freed during the operation on August 22.

Remarkably, the rescue was accomplished without any ransom payment. "I am pleased to inform you that the kingpin of this notorious gang was neutralized during an exchange of fire with our operatives," said IGP Egbetokun. "Two other members of the gang were arrested, with their weapons recovered.

These individuals are currently in our custody where they are providing valuable information that will help in dismantling their criminal network and prevent future occurrences of such abductions."

The IGP emphasized the complexity and difficulty of the rescue mission, which required extensive resources, meticulous planning, and physical courage. He extended his heartfelt appreciation to the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) for their instrumental support, particularly acknowledging the personal commitment of NSA Malam Nuhu Ribadu. "I must place on record the personal commitment of the NSA, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, to the success of the operation that led to the successful rescue of the victims," Egbetokun added.

He also praised the invaluable contributions of other security agencies and local vigilantes who played crucial roles in ensuring the mission's success.

The Vice Chancellors of the universities involved expressed their gratitude to the Nigeria Police and other security agencies for rescuing the students unharmed and without the need for ransom. Prof Tanko Ishaya, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, mentioned that the university management is planning to address the trauma experienced by the students due to the kidnapping.
