Nigerian Resident Doctors Begin 7-Day Nationwide Strike Over Colleague's Abduction

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced a seven-day nationwide strike to protest the abduction of their colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola.

The strike, which began at midnight on August 26, 2024, is a response to the kidnapping incident that occurred nearly eight months ago.

Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, an ophthalmology registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, was abducted along with her husband and nephew by unknown gunmen on December 27, 2023.

While her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity.

NARD President, Dr. Dele Abdullahi, stated, "The decision to embark on this strike was taken during the Emergency National Executive Council meeting. We demand immediate action from the authorities to secure the release of our colleague and her nephew."

The strike will result in a complete shutdown of services, including emergency care, in government hospitals across the country. "This will be a total shutdown; there will be no concessions," emphasized Dr. Abdullahi.

The abduction of Dr. Popoola is not an isolated incident. Just days before the strike, 20 medical students were kidnapped in Benue State but were fortunately rescued on August 22, 2024, without any ransom payment.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, confirmed the successful operation, stating, "The kingpin of this notorious gang was neutralized during an exchange of fire with our operatives. Two other members of the gang were arrested, and their weapons recovered."

The recent spate of kidnappings highlights the increasing insecurity faced by medical professionals in Nigeria.

The strike aims to pressure the government to enhance safety measures for healthcare workers and ensure the release of those still held captive.
