The Nigerian Senate has sounded the alarm over the infiltration of terrorists from Mali and Burkina Faso into the northwestern states of Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Niger State in the north-central region.
These terrorists, operating under the name Lakurawa, have been linked to a series of violent attacks that have claimed the lives of over 17 individuals and led to the destruction of homes in Kebbi State.
Senator Aminu Tambuwal, former governor of Sokoto State, highlighted the gravity of the situation by recalling a similar invasion in 2018. "We need to nip the situation in the bud," he urged, emphasizing the terrorists' international connections and their possession of dangerous weapons.
Senator Adamu Aliero echoed these concerns, stating, "These terrorists are well armed with highly sophisticated weapons, this is a very serious matter on national security."
The Senate has called for immediate action, urging the military to establish early warning mechanisms and maintain a strong presence in the affected areas to prevent further incursions.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, stressed the urgency of the situation, noting, "These foreigners have invaded the country."
In response to the attacks, the military has been commended for its swift action, which included neutralizing 30 terrorists in a recent engagement.
However, the Senate insists on revisiting past resolutions on terrorism to ensure comprehensive measures are implemented to curb such threats.
