Nigerian senators collectively donated ₦74 million to support the victims of a devastating flood in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
This contribution was announced by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau on behalf of Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a visit to the affected area. Each senator contributed ₦500,000, amounting to a total of ₦54 million.

Additionally, the Northern Senators Forum generously added another ₦10 million to the relief fund. "The Northern Senators Forum also donated ₦10 million, making it a total of ₦74 million," Barau stated.

The senators were warmly received by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, who expressed his gratitude for their support. Barau conveyed the Senate's condolences and solidarity with the people of Borno, emphasizing the collective responsibility in times of crisis. "Your Excellency, we are here to register our condolences and commiserate with you and the entire state over the ugly flood incident in this beautiful Borno last week," he said. Barau further highlighted the importance of such gestures, noting, "Whatever touches Borno has touched the entire country.
This is why I’m here with some of my colleagues, even though the President of the Senate was here yesterday (Monday) representing the Senate as a whole."
The senators' visit and donation underscore the critical role of governmental responsibility and collective action in addressing natural disasters and providing timely assistance to those in need.
Their unified effort serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of solidarity and support in overcoming national challenges. "May Allah SWT quicken the recovery of the injured persons and may He make those who lost their valuables regain them as soon as possible," Barau concluded, offering prayers for the swift recovery and restoration of the affected communities.
