Nigerian Students Demand Fulfillment of Bus Provision Promise from Tinubu

Esther

The Zonal Coordinators of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Wednesday issued a fervent call to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to fulfill his promise to provide buses for Nigerian students.

This plea comes after several months of waiting since the promise was initially made on July 13th, 2023, by Mr. Dele Alake, the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications & Strategy.

In a statement jointly signed by Comrade Bilal Lawal Kurfi (NAN Northwest Zone A coordinator), Daniel Friday Edgar (NANS Zone C), Comrade Alao John (Southwest Zone D coordinator), Comrade Bappa Hassan Adam (Northeast Zone E coordinator), and Comrade Chidi Nzekwe (Southeast Zone A and F coordinator), the student leaders expressed their deep displeasure over the delay.

They emphasized that the provision of these buses is not merely a matter of convenience but a critical need that massively impacts the daily lives and academic success of students across the country.

The statement highlighted the escalating transportation costs due to the removal of fuel subsidies, which has exacerbated the financial strain on students and their families.

The initiative to provide buses was seen as a vital intervention to alleviate this burden. "However, it is disappointing to note that several months have passed, and the promised buses have not been fully provided to the respective institutions," the coordinators lamented.

They further argued that the government's credibility hinges on its ability to deliver on its commitments. "A government’s credibility is built on trust and the ability to deliver on its commitments. When promises are made and not kept, it not only erodes the trust of the people but also undermines the very foundation of governance and accountability," they stated.

The NANS leaders called on President Tinubu to act swiftly and ensure that the promise is fulfilled without further delay. They also urged the President to maintain vigilance over the administration of federal universities to prevent arbitrary increases in school fees or other charges that could further burden students. "The welfare of Nigerian students should remain a top priority, and we expect nothing less than a full commitment from the President and his administration," they concluded.
