NIMC Affirms September Deadline for NIN/SIM Linkage

Esther

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has firmly established September 14, 2024, as the final deadline for all Nigerians to link their Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) with their National Identification Numbers (NINs).

This directive is part of a broader policy initiated by the Federal Government in December 2020 aimed at enhancing digital security and reducing fraud.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has reiterated that this deadline remains "sacrosanct," urging all citizens and legal residents to comply promptly.

As of now, over 153 million SIMs have been successfully linked to NINs, reflecting an impressive compliance rate of 96%, a significant increase from 69.7% in January 2024.

The NCC has directed all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to ensure full compliance with the NIN-SIM linkage policy by the set date. Effective September 15, 2024, no SIM operating in Nigeria will be without a valid NIN.

The Commission has emphasized the importance of this exercise in strengthening confidence in digital transactions, reducing the risk of fraud and cybercrime, and supporting greater participation in e-commerce, digital banking, and mobile money services. This initiative is also expected to promote financial inclusion and drive economic growth.

Despite several extensions of the deadline, many phone lines remain unlinked. The initial deadline was set for April 15, 2024, but was extended to July 31, 2024, to give consumers more time to verify their NIN details.

The NCC has urged those who have not yet completed their NIN-SIM linkage or faced verification issues to visit their service providers or use approved self-service portals to update their details before the deadline.
