The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an emergency meeting in response to the recent police summons issued to its President, Joe Ajaero, and General Secretary, Emma Ugboaja.

The summons, dated August 28, 2024, and signed by Commissioner of Police, Operations, Ibitoye Rufus Alajide, on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, requires Ajaero and Ugboaja to appear at the Force Intelligence Department (FID) Complex in Abuja on September 5, 2024, at 11 a.m.

This urgent meeting aims to address the serious allegations against the NLC leaders, including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treason, subversion, cybercrime, criminal intimidation, actions likely to cause public unrest, and property damage.

The emergency meeting signifies the NLC's commitment to managing crises and quickly establishing action plans amidst unforeseen challenges.

The NLC leaders are expected to discuss strategies to counter these allegations and ensure the stability of the union. The previous police invitation on August 19, 2024, had already seen Ajaero, accompanied by human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), other lawyers, and labor leaders, addressing the allegations on August 29, 2024.

In light of these developments, the NLC has threatened an indefinite nationwide strike if any harm befalls their president or any other union leader. This stance highlights the union's resolve to protect its leadership and maintain its advocacy for Nigerian workers' welfare.

The emergency meeting will likely focus on coordinating efforts among emergency management agencies, responders, industry, and the public to evaluate and communicate the chemical hazards in the community, as well as developing hazmat emergency plans.
