The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) convened an emergency meeting in Abuja on September 9, 2024, following the arrest and detention of its President, Joe Ajaero.
The NLC has issued a stern ultimatum demanding Ajaero's "immediate and unconditional release" by midnight on Monday.
Additionally, the union is calling for the immediate reversal of the recent fuel price hike to N617 per litre. The arrest of Ajaero, which occurred at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja as he was en route to the United Kingdom for a meeting, has sparked widespread concern and condemnation.
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the move, while the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has also called for Ajaero's release, warning that his detention sets a "dangerous precedence."
Human rights groups, including the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), have urged international bodies such as the United Nations and the United States to intervene, citing "deteriorating democratic standards" in Nigeria.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has stated that Ajaero's arrest is unrelated to any police invitation, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
The NLC has mobilized its affiliates, state councils, civil society allies, and the general public, placing them on high alert.
The union has also scheduled a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting for 9:00 am on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, to discuss further actions.
The unfolding scenario suggests potential strikes and protests if the demands are not met. "The arrest of our President is unacceptable and we demand his immediate release," said an NLC spokesperson. "We also call for the reversal of the unjust fuel price hike that is burdening Nigerians."
