NNPC Denies Importing Adulterated Petrol

F.Adenike

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has firmly denied allegations that it imports adulterated premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.

This statement comes in response to protests at its Abuja headquarters, where civil society organizations demanded the removal of Mele Kyari, NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, due to recent petrol price hikes.

Olufemi Soneye, NNPC's Chief Corporate Communications Officer, addressed these accusations, challenging critics to present evidence of any substandard fuel imported by the company.

"The NNPC Ltd. does not import adulterated fuel. If anyone has evidence to the contrary, they should bring forward samples of any such fuel imported by NNPC Ltd.," Soneye stated.

The controversy intensified following claims by Dangote Petroleum Refinery that oil marketers selling petrol at prices lower than Dangote’s are likely distributing inferior products.

This assertion arose after some marketers suggested that Dangote’s petrol prices were higher than those of imported alternatives.

Soneye also clarified that the recent spike in petrol prices is beyond the control of NNPC's CEO, emphasizing that under Kyari’s leadership, the company maintained a price of N620 per litre for over a year, despite a higher landing cost of above N1,100.

He noted, “If they were informed, they would know that the GCEO is not responsible for the fuel price increase.”
