NNPCL: Nigeria Labour Congress to Meet Over 45% Petrol Price Hike

Esther

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to convene a meeting in response to the recent 45% increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

This price hike has sparked outrage among the union members and the general public.

In a statement released, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed deep disappointment with the administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. "We feel betrayed by this government," Ajaero stated. "But if truth be told, this act of betrayal is consistent with the character of this government."

The NLC is demanding an immediate reversal of the petrol price hike, which saw pump prices soar to between N855 and N897.

The union also called for the release of all protesters detained for demonstrating against bad governance and demanded the reversal of a 250% electricity tariff increase planned for April 2024. "In the coming days, the appropriate organs of the Congress will be meeting to take appropriate decisions which will be made public," the NLC said in its statement.

This development comes at a time when the Dangote Refinery has just rolled out its petrol, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

In June 2024, both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress had previously shut down the economy in protest against economic hardship, highlighting ongoing tensions between labor unions and government policies affecting the cost of living in Nigeria.
