Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has categorically denied any plans to permit foreign military bases on Nigerian soil.
This clarification comes amidst rumors suggesting that President Bola Tinubu's recent visit to France included discussions about establishing a French military presence in the country.
During a press briefing held at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, coinciding with the unveiling of the Armed Forces of Nigeria 2025 Tattoo Logo, Gen. Musa addressed these claims directly.
"No foreign military base will be allowed in Nigeria," he asserted, emphasizing the government's commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty. Gen. Musa further elaborated on the nature of President Tinubu's engagements in France, stating, "Mr. President has made it very clear.
The agreements signed were strictly bilateral, focusing on trade, culture, tradition, cooperation, and economic ties.
There was no mention of allowing foreign military bases." He reassured the public of Nigeria's ongoing commitment to international partnerships, particularly in areas such as training and officer exchanges, which are standard practices in global military cooperation.
However, he reiterated that these collaborations do not extend to hosting foreign military installations.
