Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has stated that Northern governors cannot oppose President Bola Tinubu, as they played a crucial role in his election.
This statement comes amidst the Northern governors' rejection of a tax reform bill proposed by the Tinubu administration.
The tax reform bill, submitted to the National Assembly on October 3, 2024, includes provisions to rename the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).
It also proposes Value Added Tax (VAT) exemptions for oil and gas exports, crude petroleum oil, feed gas for processed gas, and goods used in humanitarian donor-funded projects.
Governor Sule emphasized the Northern governors' concerns about the VAT sharing formula, which they argue could be unfair to some Southern states.
In an interview with Channels Television, he remarked, "We cannot bring President Tinubu as a president, the North came in heavily to make sure Tinubu became the president, and then turn around and be against him."
He further clarified, "What we said clearly is that we want fairness in the distribution of the VAT. If we go the way it is, we are going to say it will be unfair to some other states in the South."
