On August 6th, 2024, Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang announced that the 19 northern governors in Nigeria will initiate discussions on the region's escalating birth rate.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Muftwang emphasized the urgent need for measures to address the education and welfare of the burgeoning youth population.
He warned that the lack of infrastructure for human capital development could exacerbate issues like banditry and terrorism prevalent in Northern Nigeria's three geopolitical zones.
Muftwang criticized the northern elite for failing to take responsibility for the young population, allowing criminal elements to exploit and indoctrinate the youth into insurgency and banditry.
He stressed the importance of a "carrot-and-stick" strategy, holding parents accountable for out-of-school children and ensuring no willing child remains uneducated by the end of his term in 2027.
The governor also highlighted the role of agriculture and food security in combating poverty, despite challenges posed by banditry.
The discussions among the northern governors aim to create a national dialogue involving religious leaders to align societal responsibilities with global realities.
