NUT Raises Alarm Over Shortages of Teachers in Public Primary Schools

Esther

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has raised an alarm over the acute shortage of teachers in public primary schools across the nation.

This concern was brought to light by the National President of NUT, Audu Amba, during the 2024 World Teachers' Day celebration held in Abuja.

The event, themed "Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education," underscored the critical manpower deficit that is plaguing the education sector.

According to a survey conducted by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), there is a staggering shortfall of 194,876 teachers in public primary schools throughout Nigeria.

This shortage has dire implications, contributing to what Amba describes as "learning poverty" among pupils and casting a shadow over their future prospects.

The situation is particularly dire in Junior and Senior Secondary Schools, especially those located in rural communities. Amba expressed his dissatisfaction with the non-implementation of welfare packages for teachers, which were announced by former President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2020 World Teachers' Day. He urged both federal and state governments to fully implement these incentives to enhance teacher morale and effectiveness in their professional duties.

In response to these challenges, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, acknowledged the issues faced by teachers and assured them of the government's commitment to addressing these educational challenges. He emphasized the need for urgent policy action to improve teacher recruitment and retention, highlighting the government's support towards empowering teachers and providing training in technological skills.
