The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially clarified that there is no directive to increase the monthly allowance for corps members to N70,000.

This statement was made by Eddy Megwa, the Director of Information and Public Relations at NYSC, who described the reports as "misleading."

The speculation began after the Federal Government signed a new minimum wage law on July 30, 2024, which raised the minimum wage to N70,000.

However, according to Megwa, "No directive has been given by the relevant authority for it to start the payment of #70,000 minimum wage to Corps Members or to upgrade their accounts."

The NYSC emphasized that any information regarding changes in allowances would come through official channels.

"Corps members, parents and members of the public should note that no directive has been received from the relevant sector of government responsible for wages matters. It is therefore impossible for the NYSC to issue any information on such," Megwa added.

The organization also warned against misinformation, urging corps members to ignore unauthorized directives and to rely only on official communications. "Bloggers and social media influencers are warned to stop issuing statements that concern the management of the National Youth Service Corps without authorization," the statement read.

Despite the clarification, many corps members remain hopeful for an eventual increase in their stipends. The current monthly allowance stands at N33,000, a figure that has been in place since the last adjustment.
