NYSC Demobilises 54 Fake UNICAL Graduates

In a move to uphold the integrity of Nigeria's National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), 54 individuals from the University of Calabar (UNICAL) have been demobilized for illegal mobilization into the youth service.

This action is part of NYSC's ongoing efforts to prevent unqualified individuals from obtaining the prestigious NYSC certificate of national service.

The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, announced this development in a statement issued, by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr. Eddy Megwa.

According to Ahmed, the demobilized candidates will face prosecution. Additionally, 19 other candidates who initially registered online for mobilization have been barred from service, and four certificates of national service were not produced by the scheme.

"This is in addition to the earlier 101 certificates that were recently voided by the scheme, making a total of 178," Ahmed stated.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL, Professor Florence Obi, was commended for her proactive role in identifying and reporting the unqualified graduates.

"The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar came here to report that she observed some names appeared on the institution’s list and they ought not to have been there.

She checked the list the school gave us and I told her that their certificates would be invalidated. I give kudos to the Vice-Chancellor," Ahmed said.

Highlighting the severity of the issue, Ahmed recalled a previous incident where a bread seller was mobilized as a graduate from UNICAL.

"There are bad eggs in many places that generate matriculation numbers and courses for their candidates," he added.

Ahmed emphasized that NYSC would leave no stone unturned in sanitizing its mobilization process.

The scheme plans to intensify collaboration with all Heads of Corps Producing Institutions and relevant stakeholders across the country to curb this menace.

"Those who are responsible for imputing the data of graduates should be people of integrity," he stressed.

He also called on employers to verify the authenticity of NYSC certificates presented for job placements, ensuring that only qualified individuals benefit from the program.
